| About Used Lab Equipment: 1 Monster Laboratories specializes in the instruments for automation and high throughput because we have special skills in this area. It's what we like to do, we're good at it, and it sets us apart. We opened in 2001 when friends in academic labs were scrounging for the equipment they needed. Remember the burst? 2 There are over 100 used lab dealers in the US, not counting eBay. Believe it or not, they are not all ethical, qualified or experienced. Some of the instruments you need are sophisticated, but vendors may only be skilled at operating a forklift and checkbook. We work with many dealers around the country, and we have compiled a rolodex of qualified and honorable specialists so you don't have to buy it twice. 3 There are many reasons for looking at used lab equipment for your next analytical instrument or research project. Money is a big one. Expect to pay half price for a used machine. But you need actual, not just verbal assurance the thing will work. Considering the nature of light and mass, very little about has changed. But manufacturing and marketing the equipment has become incredibly expensive and competitive. You won't always get a fair shake from players who live or die with their brand. 4 Manufacturers discontinue support for their machines to make way for their new products. Most scientific instruments were made to last, designed and manufactured to very high standards. Properly maintained, they should last forever. We work with dealers who warranty their work and offer service, who work within their specialty, with repair shops and parts, experience diagnosing a photo diode or flow cell. 5 When an instrument has been in use in your field, something valuable happens: Experience. Given the nature of scientific literature, you're often better off getting a used machine since papers and applications notes are available. A used vendor will also have wider experience with instruments for an appllication, and should be able to warn you away from unreliable or difficult instruments. 6 There are reasons to avoid the used market too. We hate it when someone calls to tell us they bought a plate reader with no software, no warranty. "As-is, where is" is no way to go. "As-is" means "We don't know if it's complete." "Where is" means it's in a warehouse, along with sinks, crates of closeout clothing, Chinese plastic toys, and nobody has actually plugged it in. If your technology has just been born, you might be better off with a new machine. Castoffs and failed products certainly happen. Look for the white hat. |
